HISTORY
Kath and Russell Barker opened Uncle Peter’s Books on Australia Day (26
January) 1997 in a room at the back of a craft shop, Country Village Crafts, in
the small heritage village of Bangalow in the far north coast of New South
Wales.
The shop was named after Russell's uncle, Peter Radford, a well-known
English bibliophile.
In April 1998 the bookshop
moved to the back area of the Bangalow Post Office. Postmaster Terry Bleakley
had realised he didn’t need all the space in the building to conduct the Post
Office business, and invited Uncle Peter’s Books to move in. The combined shop
was known as the Bangalow Post Office Heritage Store. Within the Post Office,
Uncle Peter’s Books quickly gained a reputation as an excellent secondhand
bookshop, attracting visitors from throughout Australia and overseas.
Uncle
Peter’s Books moved to the neighbouring town of Lismore in February 2008.
From February 2008 29 March 2014. Uncle Peter’s Books shared the shop
premises (38 Carrington Street, Lismore) with another business, Kay’s
Secondhand Books and Sheet Music Australia. From October 2010 to March 2014,
Uncle Peter's Books was the sole occupant of the shop. It ceased operations
in Lismore on 29 March 2014.
Since 10 May 2014, Uncle Peter's Books has been
operating at the current cottage at 29 Main Street in the village of Clunes, between Lismore and Byron
Bay on the north coast of New South Wales.
